Overview: What are we talking about?

Coupons are percentage or dollar amount discounts (or surcharges/ up-charges), that can be applied to line items in the shopping cart at checkout.

This article includes:

Helpful Hints: Before you begin.

  • Some of your common discounts such as multiple dog discounts and late checkout fees can be automated using Pricing Rules.

  • There are two types of Coupons:

    1. Multi-Use coupons are created ahead of time in the Admin section, and then used repeatedly in the cart

    2. Single Use Coupons are created at the moment of checkout in the cart. Note that coupons created in the cart are automatically saved to the list of available coupons.

  • All admin users have access to the admin page controlling these settings. Additionally, admin users are able to delegate this particular admin page to other user groups. Non-admin users with access to this page will be able to make edits that affect all locations in the app. For more information see our article on User Groups and Permissions

  3. Use this Field Guide to create your coupon:

    Setting Description Helpful Hint
Location Select the location where you want this coupon to be used.  Coupons are location-specific, and cannot be used at multiple locations.
Code  This is a code you can share with customers when telling them about a promotion, and it is also the name of the coupon as it will appear in the cart.
    Amount OR Percent

Amount: This is the dollar amount the coupon will deduct or add. Enter it in the following format: xx.xx. For a discount, use a positive number. For an up-charge, use a negative number

Percent: This is the percentage amount the coupon will deduct or add. Enter it in the following format: xx.xx (15.90 = 15.9%).

Fill out only one of these fields.
    Description

Enter a very short description of the coupon.

This will appear on customers' receipts when you apply the coupon

Expiration Date All coupons must expire. You can choose the year 2030 or some time far in the future if you would prefer the coupon to last "forever".
Reusable This will indicate whether or not this coupon can be re-used by a customer or customer(s). This setting will be phasing it's way out soon. Please be sure that this says yes/on
Status  Is this coupon active? This will not actually delete the coupon but turn the status off so that it is no longer accessible.
Once Per Owner  If this setting is enabled, the system will only allow this coupon to be used once per owner.  This is helpful if you offer "newcomer" discounts or one-time only coupons.

Using Multi-Use Coupons in the Cart:

After creating coupons, it is always recommended that you test them and that your staff is trained on how to use them.
  1. In the cart, click the Coupon button on any line item.
  2. Select the coupon you want to apply.
  3. The coupon will appear beneath any other price modifiers (Pricing Rules). The discount will be shown in the Unit Price and be reflected in the Subtotal. The discount will also be shown on the customer's receipt.

Single-Use Coupons

Single-Use Coupons are one-off coupons that you add while you are in the cart. This requires the Can create coupons in the cart user permission to be turned on.
  1. Click the coupon button on any line item in the cart
  2. Enter a Description and Amount for your coupon. When entering the Amount, it is important to remember that a Positive amount = Discount and a Negative amount = Surcharge.
  3. Click the + button to complete adding the coupon. The coupon will appear beneath any other price modifiers (Pricing Rules). The discount will be shown in the Unit Price and be reflected in the Subtotal. The discount will also be shown on the customer's receipt.

Settings

There are a few system-wide settings to consider before using coupons. You can find the below settings under Left-hand Navigation: Admin » Check Out Options.

Setting Description Helpful Hint
Apply coupons to final modifiers If turned Off, coupons applied to a line item will only apply to the base rate and not to any "Final Rate Modifiers," such as Check in before/after, Check out Before/after, Specific Date, minutes after last 24 hour period... This setting is turned On by default.
Allow Coupons Cart-Wide Allows coupons to be applied in bulk to all items in the cart.
