Gingr Payments Surcharging (Topic Outline)

Article Details

Credit Card Surcharging is a feature built directly into Gingr Payments that allows pet-care businesses to offset credit card processing costs by applying a configurable surcharge to eligible credit card transactions. When enabled, Gingr automatically adds the surcharge at checkout — whether in person, through the Pet Parent Portal, or on recurring memberships — and displays it as a separate line item so pet parents can review the total before completing payment.

Surcharges apply only to credit card transactions. Debit cards, prepaid cards, and gift cards are never surcharged; Gingr detects the card type automatically. The surcharge rate is configurable from 0–3%, in line with Visa and Mastercard network rules. When a transaction is refunded, the surcharge is also refunded — fully or proportionally — based on the amount returned.

Unlike a convenience fee, which is a flat amount charged for offering an alternative payment method, a surcharge is a percentage-based fee applied specifically to recover credit card processing costs.

Notice:  Credit Card Surcharging is only available to U.S.-based merchants utilizing Gingr Payments Integrated Credit Card Processing.

Caution:  Surcharging regulations vary by state and card network. Some states restrict or prohibit surcharging. Always consult legal counsel to confirm eligibility and ensure compliance in your jurisdiction before enabling this feature.
