Overview

Set up $0.00 memberships using the same Membership setup module as regular paid memberships. Many of the steps are identical; this guide highlights each tab of the module and calls out the special settings or behavior unique to $0 memberships.

Important: Once a $0 membership is enrolled, its benefits remain active until its expiration - even if the membership is later canceled. The signature requirement (if made optional) must be chosen before enrollment and can’t be changed afterward. 

How to Set Up $0.00 Memberships

Below is a breakdown of each tab in the Membership setup module. 

Setup Module Standard Configuration $0 Membership Specifics
1. Details Name, status, locations, redemption specifics, and description No special differences here, except you’ll likely name it something like “$0 Membership” or "Promotional.”
2. Benefits Select benefits: billing cycles, discounts, credit usage, usage limits, and special pricing. Benefits function normally. No special behavior changes for a $0 Membership.
3. Financial Tax settings, account codes, pricing rules, base rates, and future rate updates.

Set Base Rate = $0.00

The “Require Signature for $0 Memberships” toggle becomes available. 

  • If the toggle is OFF, the agreement displays but signing is optional
  • Once a customer is enrolled, this toggle becomes locked
  • If the toggle is OFF, you cannot later increase the rate above $0
4. Communication
(Terms & Conditions) 
Upload your custom T&C PDF, include disclaimers, rules, etc. The agreement still displays, even if signature is optional. If no PDF uploaded, default summary is used. A digital signature or SMS send option is still available although not required when toggle is OFF. 

 

After completing all tabs in the Membership setup module, review the membership setup carefully. Confirm that the "Require Signature for $0 Memberships" toggle is set as desired, along with all other details and benefits. Once verified, save and activate the membership so it is available for enrollment.

 

Step-by-Step Example

Here’s a general walkthrough setup for a $0 membership:

  1. Details Tab

    • Name: “0$ Daycare | Monthly”

    • Status: Enabled

    • Locations: Select all or desired ones

    • Redeem Only at Purchase Location: OFF

    • Description: Enter how this free membership works

  2. Benefits Tab

    • Renewal Cycle/Schedule/Expiration: Select the cadence and billing of your membership.
    • Choose which benefits apply (e.g. 10% discount on daycare OR 30 service credits/month)

  3. Financial Tab

    • Tax: toggle depending on whether the membership should be taxed (often no)

    • Account code: assign to your designated account code for memberships

    • Use Pricing Rules on Other Reservation Types: When enabled, membership credits applied to a different reservation type will follow that reservation type’s pricing rules, rather than the rules of the membership’s original type. 
      • Turn this on if "Allow Memberships credits benefits on any reservation type" is enabled and you want membership credits to be applied flexibly across different reservation types, while still respecting each reservation type’s configured pricing rules.
    • Use the Require Signature for $0 Memberships toggle:

      • ON (default): Signature is required before enrollment

      • OFF: Signature is optional; pet parent still views agreement but is not forced to sign

    • Select which locations the rates will apply to and set the Base Rate = 0.00
  4. Terms & Conditions / Communication Tab

    • Upload your membership T&C PDF (≤2MB recommended)

  5. Review / Save

    • Verify all settings - especially the signature toggle

    • Select Save

    • Ensure membership shows in the list with correct status

Additional Notes & Behavior

  • Enrollment Behavior: In $0 memberships where the signature toggle is OFF, the enrollment page will show the agreement as optional. The Purchase button becomes active without a signature.

  • Locking the Signature Setting: After the first enrollment, the signature requirement toggle is locked and can no longer be edited.

  • Rate Changes: If the signature toggle was turned off, you cannot later raise the rate above $0.

  • Agreement Access: Staff and pet parents can view signed or unsigned agreements via the Business Portal (Pet Parent profile > Agreements tab) or Customer Portal (Account > Waivers & Agreements).

  • Benefit Activation: Even if the membership is later canceled, its benefits remain valid through its expiration date.
